I’ll tell you one of my favorite places in Apache Junction: the public library.
I go for the quiet. There’s a kind of quiet you can’t get at home — no TV, no phone buzzing, just the low hum of a building full of people reading. And they run writing classes and a writers group, which, if you know me, explains a lot.
But here’s the thing most people don’t know: that free library card is the best deal in town, and it isn’t close.
It’s not just books
Yes, books and movies. But also:
- A makerspace — tools and equipment for making things, not just reading about them.
- A seed library — take seeds, grow them, bring back what you learn. There’s a whole planting and harvesting resource shelf next to it.
- Digitization services — bring in old photos, VHS tapes, documents and convert them before they rot in a box.
- One-on-one tech help — somebody will sit with you until the phone makes sense.
- Free computer classes every month, no registration required.
- Proctoring for exams and certifications.
The Culture Pass
This one’s my favorite surprise. Your library card gets you into Valley museums, cultural institutions, and performances — free — through the Culture Pass program. If you’ve got grandkids visiting and want a day trip that doesn’t cost $80, start here.
Writing classes and book clubs
The Writers Group meets the first Thursday of the month (1–3 PM) and the third Tuesday (6–8 PM) — bring what you’re working on. There’s also a Local Author Book Fair on November 30 if you’ve got a book in you.
Book clubs for every taste, including Books & Brews, which meets at the Handlebar Pub & Grill — books and beer, no further explanation needed.
For the grandkids
Storytimes, LEGO afternoons, Dungeons & Dragons for ages 10+, a teen space, and the Fun Van — a literacy program for families with little ones, running sessions around Pinal County.
The mobile library
Can’t get to Idaho Road? The library comes to you. The mobile library runs a monthly route through senior living communities, RV resorts, the Boys & Girls Club, and neighborhood stops across AJ and Gold Canyon.
