Cooler weather has arrived, along with all the fall and Halloween festivals. Let’s get outdoors and feel like humans again. Plenty of things going on — pick what you like and let’s celebrate.
One weather note up front, because it shapes the week: storms roll through Wednesday and Thursday (there’s a Flood Watch up for it), then it clears. Saturday the 24th looks sunny and 76 — perfect for the city festival. Keep an eye on the 29th and 30th; there’s rain in that forecast too.
Saturday, October 24 — the big day
AJ Halloween Festival — 4–8 PM, Superstition Shadows Park. Free. Trunk-or-treating, costume contests (judging at 5 PM sharp), a pumpkin-carving contest (carve at home, bring it in by 6), a dog costume contest right after the human one, pumpkin painting, inflatables, games, and live music by Zero Reasons. The city bills it as the safe alternative to neighborhood trick-or-treating, and it’s the biggest Halloween thing in town this year.
Goldfield Ward Trunk or Treat — 6–8 PM, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2520 E Old West Hwy.
Halloween night — Saturday, October 31
Halloween Night at the Wheelhouse — from 6 PM, Wheelhouse Tavern, 495 W Apache Trail. The biggest bar night in AJ: costume contest with $100 for first, $50 second, $25 third; live music by The Black Hole; food and drink specials and giveaways all night. No cover listed. (Me & G plays earlier, noon–3.)
Superstition Foothills Baptist Church Fall Festival — 6–8 PM, Peralta Canyon Neighborhood Park, Gold Canyon. 100% free and open to everybody: candy, games, food, music, a bounce house, cake walks, a raffle. The biggest free family event on Halloween night itself.
Monster Mash Bike Bash — 11 AM–3 PM, Superstition Harley-Davidson. Costume contest at 2, in-store poker run noon–3, pumpkin painting.
Rusty Buckle Saloon — live music Halloween night: Max Tovstyi and Strait Country. No contest posted; the music’s the draw.
Family fun, all week
Schnepf Farms Pumpkin & Chili Party — all month through Oct 31, 24810 S Rittenhouse Rd, Queen Creek. $28.95 a person (2 and under free). Corn maze, hayrides, U-pick pumpkins, pig races, bonfires. Open Wed 4–9, Thu noon–9, Fri noon–10, Sat 10–10, Sun 10–9. The Spooky Train Ride ($10 extra) starts at 6:30 PM.
Goosebumps Dinner at DirtWater Springs — Thu Oct 29, 5 PM, 586 W Apache Trail. An interactive three-course kids’ dinner built on three Goosebumps stories — storytelling, silly science experiments, a goodie bag, and a menu with Zombie Fingers and Werewolf Chow on it. Price isn’t posted; call (480) 983-3478.
Read & Rec BOO BASH — Fri Oct 30, 10–11 AM, Superstition Shadows Park. The little-kid one.
Also this week, not Halloween but worth the trip: the library’s new Superstition Reading Garden opens with a ribbon cutting Thu Oct 22, 4–6 PM, 1177 N Idaho Rd — 20,000 square feet of garden, greenhouse, and shaded tables. Free.
Grown-up nights
The Rusty Buckle’s week of music — 285 N Apache Trail. Fri Oct 23: Whiskey Road. Sat Oct 24: Ben Alston + Desert Knights Band. Sun Oct 25: Kade & Darren Hafner. Thu Oct 29: Ben Alston. Fri Oct 30: Highway 260 Band. Sat Oct 31: Max Tovstyi + Strait Country.
The Wheelhouse before the big night — Canyon State Band plays Fri Oct 23 and Sat Oct 24, 6–9 PM (Friday is also Fish Fry, 11–8). Sun Oct 25: Emily Michelle 1–4 PM, then the Sunday Cruise-In 6–9 — classic cars, hot rods, trucks, motorcycles, all welcome, free.
Live bull riding at the Hitching Post — Thu and Sat nights, including Oct 29 and 31, 2341 N Apache Trail. Halloween or not, this is the most AJ thing on the list.
Ghost hunting at the museum — Sun Oct 25, Superstition Mountain Lost Dutchman Museum, 4087 E Apache Trail. AZ Ghost Tours runs a real paranormal investigation: hands-on gear, pizza included, $50 a person. Book at azghosttours.com.
Fear Frontier at Goldfield Ghost Town — the daytime Spirits of the Bordello tour runs daily during Goldfield hours ($13 adults / $11 seniors / $9 kids). The after-dark Goldfield Ghost Tour — lantern walk, about an hour and 45 minutes, underground included — runs selected October evenings ($35 / $32 / $25). They don’t post a date calendar; check fearfrontier.net for your night before you go.
Worth the drive (check before you go)
Sanctum of Horror (6525 E Southern Ave, Mesa) and Scarizona Scaregrounds (1901 N Alma School Rd, Mesa) are the big haunted-house options one town over. Nights and prices move around — check their sites before you load the car.
Trick-or-treat, straight
Apache Junction doesn’t set official trick-or-treat hours — the city has never posted any, and neither has Pinal County. Neighborhoods do their own thing; the city’s big answer is the festival on the 24th. If anyone tells you there’s an official time, there isn’t.
One honest note
The 55+ parks throw their own Halloween parties, and by all accounts they’re good ones — but they’re for residents and their guests, so they’re not listed here as public events. Same for the Elks: members and guests.
Let us know what we missed. If your church, park, bar, or block is doing something and it’s not here, send it to tips@apachejunction411.com and we’ll add it. Now get outside — October only comes once a year.
